Rohan Bahadur – Innovator in Nanomaterials for Energy, Environment, and Biomedical Applications
Rohan Bahadur is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Global Innovative Center for Advanced Nanomaterials (GICAN), University of Newcastle, Australia. With over a decade of experience, Rohan has dedicated his career to advancing the field of nanomaterials, particularly 2D and 0D materials, to address pressing challenges in energy storage, environmental sustainability, and biomedical applications. At GICAN, his work focuses on designing hybrid multifunctional nanomaterials for energy storage and environmental remediation. Rohan has an impressive record of publications in high-impact journals, both as a lead author and collaborator. His first-author works appear in prestigious journals like  SmallCarbon, ACS Applied Biomaterials, Chemical Engineering Journal, and ChemSusChem. As a co-author, he has contributed to landmark studies published in Chemical Society Reviews (I.F. 40.4), Advanced Materials (I.F. 27.4), Progress in Materials Science (I.F. 39.5), Advanced Functional Materials (I.F. 18.5), and Small (I.F. 13.0), among others. Rohan’s impactful research has earned him over 1,500 citations and an h-index of 17 on Google Scholar

He completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Newcastle in 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Ajayan Vinu. His doctoral work centered on functionalized carbon nitride materials and their nanoporous hybrids, which have shown significant potential in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, hybrid capacitors, and supercapacitors. These materials’ porous structures also make them highly effective for CO₂ capture, conversion, and H₂ storage. Beyond his research, Rohan actively mentors students at various academic levels and teaches advanced courses like “Multifunctional Advanced Nanomaterials.”
Before his Ph.D., Rohan earned an M.Sc. in Chemistry from VIT University, where he explored green synthesis techniques, including reducing graphene oxide using plant extracts. During his time as a Junior Research Fellow at IIT Bombay, he worked on 2D materials like graphene, MoS₂, WS₂, and MXenes, along with their 0D analogues such as quantum dots, for cancer theranostics and biosensing applications. Rohan’s efforts at IIT Bombay resulted in impactful publications in journals like  ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, ACS Applied Biomaterials, Materials Science and Engineering: C, and the Journal of Luminescence. His work on PEGylated tungsten disulfide quantum dots and fluorescent MXene nanocomposites for photothermal cancer therapy and imaging led to patents, demonstrating his ability to translate research into practical solutions. He also holds patents on carbon dot-based biosensors, emphasizing their utility in bioanalyte detection and fingerprint sensing. Further showcasing his expertise, Rohan co-authored the book Next Generation Graphene Nanomaterials for Cancer Theranostic Applications (Springer, 2021), solidifying his role as a thought leader in integrating nanotechnology with biomedical innovation.
